Screaming
Stoner Video: Please tell us about your current projects, what are you up
to these days?
Brinke Stevens: I've acted in 26 movies over the past two years, and many
of them are now available or coming out soon: DELTA DELTA DIE!, BIRTH
RITE, BLEED, DEADLY STINGERS, NIGHTWALKERS, DEMON SKULL (due May '04),
EXPENDABLE, DEAD CLOWNS, ZOMBIEGEDDON, DR. HORROR'S EROTIC HOUSE OF
IDIOTS, FIVE DARK SOULS III (due Sept '04), and many more.
As a writer, I contributed a big chapter (on '80's horror films) for
"ATTACK OF THE B-QUEENS" (Luminary Press). Soon I'll have a
section in Jason Collum's upcoming book
"ASSAULT OF THE KILLER B'S" (McFarland Press). And I had a short
story, ACHIEVER, (co-written with David C. Barber) accepted for a
Cyberpress book, due this summer.
Currently, I'm heading to Virginia in April to shoot APOCALYPSE (playing a
female priest). In May, I'll be in Kansas City, MO, for XELINE (as a
black-ops government assassin). And in June, I play a corrupt cop in SEE
NO EVIL, to be shot in Sacramento, CA.
Please tell us your favorite memory of working on
The Slumber Party Massacre as Linda, what's the coolest feedback you've
received from the classic horror film to date?
That was my very first movie role (1981), and it truly defined my entire
career of the next 23 years. It was my first horror movie -- the first
time I was menaced by a madman, screamed, ran, and died horribly. But
certainly not the last time, not by any means!
It was delightful to reprise my role of Linda in SPM 4. Though later
retitled THE CHEERLEADER MASSACRE, it was supposed to take place twenty
years after the original film -- and it presumes that my character did, in
fact, survive the driller killer's assault.
Having recently attended the Something To Scream
About DVD signing in Los Angeles at The Virgin Megastore, what was that
like for you? With the exception of Debra Deliso, was that the first time
you met many of the other "Scream Queens?"
It was like a glamorous, old-fashioned Hollywood event... very exciting! I
hadn't seen Debra since 1981, but I frequently encounter the other ladies
at fan conventions. First, we had a marvelous dinner together with
producer JR Bookwalter and director Jason
P. Collum. At the Virgin store, I was so surprised to see a wall of DVDs,
all bearing my screaming face, like so many tiny TV monitors. We had a
good turn-out, as lots of nice people came by to greet us and hang out for
several hours.
Being a body double in Psycho 3, what was that like?
Which scene?
My agent sent me over to Universal
Studios to meet Mr. Perkins in his office there. They needed a petite
woman like myself to double for Diana Scarwid. Tony asked me to stand
before him in a bathing suit and turn around once. Then he sighed,
"You're perfect!" I worked three days on-set (Perkins
also directed it). I wore a short platinum wig and little else. (In the
movie, he's peeping through a hole in the hotel room wall, watching
"me" undress and walk naked to the bathroom -- it's right before
Diana slits her wrists in the tub.) He was a gentle, pleasant man who
treated me well.
What advice do you have for other actors or
actresses?
Have a dream and follow it. Never give up.
Do you feel that the horror film genre is
progressing or regressing?
It's evolving, both for better and worse. I wish more horror filmmakers
would dare to go beyond "PG-13" ratings.
What is the coolest film you've seen in the last
three months and why?
I really enjoyed PIRATES
OF THE CARIBBEAN. Johnny Depp's performance was such fun, and the
zombies were very cool... a great use of CGI and special effects make-up.
It looks like you're close to having appeared in
over 87 films, if you had to pick the accomplishment you were most proud
of, what would it be?
Actually, I think I'm up to around 120 movies now. (The imdb
is a bit behind.) My personal favorite is HAUNTING FEAR. It was my first
leading lady role, a huge part (I'm in almost every scene) -- and I slowly
go insane as the movie progresses. It was quite an acting challenge for me
at that time (1991), and I'm very proud that I was able to pull it off.
